Back to topBuilding an Entertainment Center for a client. Here's what the client decided on for the design: A narrow bookcase on each side, with a TV cabinet in the middle.
Here it is without the doors or drawers:
Drawing were done with SketchUp, and yes the crown molding will go all the way to the ceiling. As you can see the TV cabinet fits back in a cubby built into the wall.
Here it is installed, trimmed out and painted. From the original design we changed the doors from pocket doors to bifold doors.

Everything starts with getting the wood. Here I've got the 3/4" Birch plywood and the 1/2 plywood for the backs. Yeah I could have used 1/4" plywood for the backs but the 1/2" will make a stronger cabinet and I can screw through it into the studs without a additional nailing strip.
You can't tell but it's an partly cloudy day. So I need to get this unloaded and broken down in case it rains. First sheet is on the table to be cut down.
Using the table, EZ-Smartguide and a circular saw the first sheet goes pretty quickly.
These are the sides for the bookcases.
Here they are on the workbench, laying out where the dado's are going to go.
Here's the first dado joint ready to cut, using my homemade dado jig and plunge router. The jig is pretty simple to use. Line up the fixed side (where the clamps are) with the line. Insert a scrap piece of plywood, and move the adjustable side up tight to the piece. Then lock the two black knobs down. Then with a plunge router and a bit (I bought mine from Woodline USA) like this:
Since the bit is narrower than the dado, you run the bit down one side of the jig and then up the other side. The bearing is the same size that the bit cuts so you end up with a nice fitting dado joint.
A little later, most of the dados are cut into two of the sides that I've clamped together. There's a piece of scrap plywood in the first dado to ensure that everything stays aligned.
Well I got a late start today. So that's all for the first day, off to dinner. Tomorrow I should be able to finish the dado joints in the sides of the other bookcase. Cut the shelves for the bookcases, and dry assemble the bookcases. Since its going to rain, I won't be able to do any cutting outside which will limit me working with the full sheets of plywood that are now hanging out in the shop.
The next day was spent running errands. I did manage to get the side for the other bookcase dado'd.
